Paradoxical challenges:
Clinic for eye cure through Laser processes is a peculiar context that dwells within the paradoxical challenges. As a high technology process it wants to inspire confidence through exhibition of the state of the art technology, while as healing environment it wants to remain humane and interactive. As medically controlled environment it wants to create the closed interiority with controlled environment, while as relaxing therapeutic space it wants to be connected to nature and outdoors. As Medical installations it wants to be straight forward comprehensible space, while as an eye clinic it deals with visual perception and optical illusions. As linear space it is natural...

As linear space it is natural for it to organise as sequential, while diverse functional demands call for organisational clusters. Within these challenges the centre for sight endeavours to create calming, humane, indulging and inspiring healing environments.
Spatial organisation:
Linear sight’s monotony is broken by alternating mass of activity zones, meandering movement paths as well as enlarged pause points and widened space nodes along linear circulation path. The activities are zoned to take reception lounges and waiting areas at two ends to respond to two access points respectively. Frontal waiting lounges are adjoined by the diagnostic areas while the therapeutic and surgical areas are in the centre as final destination from either end’s sequence. This makes for clear functional zoning for procedural clarity, efficient sequence of activities as well as environmental control intensity. The edge cabins are glazed for visual continuity, as well as ingress of daylight. Central circular transparent cabin for the Doctor in chief, functions as physical as well as notional centre to emanate and converge activities from, to serve as constant reference, as strong association with principal doctor, allow un-inturrupted outside in and inside out sightlines and the iconic identity of the place. Barriers between Excimer laser operation theatre have also been maintained transparent to allow patiens as well as relatives to maintain visual rapport while surgery as well as to create confidence in technology and surgery processes by being able to witness it all along. Ceiling is also modulated to provide spatial/volumetric variety and definition of pause versus circulation. Thus within singular and very linear space it achieves ease of comprehension for disposition of functions at a glance and natural flow of movement and yet necessary isolation for required functions, visual discontinuity as well as spatial variety suited to diverse functions.
Value additions through kinaesthetic Visual perception, Illusions and interactivity:
Being an Eye clinic, spatial features have tried playing up with the phenomenon of visual perception, optical and space illusions as well as interactivity with the perceiver through surface articulations as well as spatial installations. First of all the use of glass in the internal partition to allow for maximum daylight and maintain visual continuity create illusions of scale of spaces with visual continuity and physical discontinuity. All along the linear passage architectural landmarks of the city are profiled through 2D cut outs and composed all along very long circulation path inner edges. This creates a sense of walking in the street of the city, it makes it indulging game to recognise the identity of these legacies as well as spatial variety and varying visual compositions through changing view points as well as associational bond with the city through familiar visual branding by the silhouettes. The opposite edge of the same circulation path being glazed, in certain light conditions, it acts as mirror and creates spontaneous play of multiple reflections of landmark buildings from passage side, while with light difference from cabin spaces of the peripheral edge, inside out, they maintain transparency and the architectural installations become backdrop plane as if city skyline. Dotted all along, the opaque surfaces of the wall planes have been overlaid with interactive visual puzzles, optical games and illusionary installations. Natural plants where ever possible along the window edges, vignettes through glazed outer edges, live aquarium as well as programmable water fountain all along central circular cabin also provide for much needed positive distraction as psychological relief and stress buster in a healing environments.
Environmental management and efficiency:
Sanitized air with world standard hygiene and indoor air quality, the controlled environment space has fresh air inlets as well as extra filters in operation areas to isolate that air from circulating in rest of spaces. Day light has been optimised through glazed inner partitions for edge window’s diffused illumination’s deeper penetration. Natural plants and central water fountain help create micro climate supliments apart from recalling nature/ outdoors within. Multi combination curtains with opaque and transparent slits allow for multiple permutation and combinations to suitably control daylight and views. State of the art energy efficient LED lighting fixtures have been applied to optimise electrical consumption.
